Obligation to equip vehicles with smart tachograph version 2 (G2V2) for international transport

According to the provisions of Regulation (EU) 2020/1054, vehicles operating in an EU Member State other than their Member State of registration must be retrofitted with the smart tachograph version 2 (G2V2), as follows:

• For vehicles currently equipped with an analogue tachograph or a digital non-smart tachograph and which operators expect to continue operating in another Member State than the Member State of registration, the deadline to retrofit is 31 December 2024.
• For vehicles currently equipped with a smart tachograph version 1 and which operators continue to expect to operate in another EU Member State than the Member State of registration, the deadline to retrofit is 18 August 2025.

Fleet operators are encouraged to plan ahead and make use of the biannual tachograph inspection, in order to reduce costs, to replace older versions of tachographs with G2V2 devices.
