Changes in the Hungarian toll system, 1 January 2024
Hungarian association MKFE informed that on 1 January 2024, the road toll system in Hungary will change significantly. On February 1, 2024, buses and coaches will also be included in the HU-GO system. The same rates will apply.
Summary of the most important information:
- - A new “J5” axle category (heavy goods vehicles with 5 or more axles) will be introduced. The “J4” category will now only include heavy goods vehicles with 4 axles.
- - The tolled network will be expanded: the M0 highway will be included (section between M5-M1).
- - The external cost charges will be included for traffic-based air pollution, noise and CO2 emissions.
- - Two new environmental protection vehicles classes will appear: low-emission vehicle and zero-emission vehicle. Their definitions are the same as those specified in points 11 and 12 of Article 3 of EU Regulation 2019/1242. They come on top of the vehicle classification based on the Euro norms.
From January 1, 2024, the new toll rate structure consists of three elements: the infrastructure charge (fixed element), CO2 emission external cost charge (fixed element), external cost charges related to air pollution and noise (varied according to the tolled sections)
The new rates containing the three elements of charges can be found here (in Hungarian). The rates include VAT (27%).
Road users can already calculate how much toll will have to be paid for their journeys using the official calculator of the toll provider. The interface can already be used in English and is being translated into other languages.
Toll rates will increase significantly, even +50% for five-axle EURO VI vehicles. Some examples, indicating the current and future toll costs. For EURO V and IV categories, rate increase can be higher. Examples:
