Spain: Farmer protests – impact on roads
INTERNATIONAL NEWS09 February 2024
The mobilisation of farmers is increasingly intensifying across Spain, creating serious problems on Spanish roads.
Currently, only self-organised groups are calling for mobilisation via social media, such as slow moving caravans and blocking main routes and logistics centres.
But there are now a series of demonstrations organised by the three main Spanish farmer organisations: ASAJA, COPAG and UPA.
Additionally, an organisation named “Plataforma para la defensa del transporte” (which caused 20 days of conflict on Spanish roads in March 2022) has called for a full blockade to stop trucks and block roads, jointly with farmers, starting on Saturday 10 February, until they meet their objectives.
The other main Spanish organisations, including ASTIC, do not support this movement. But it is hard to determine whether Plataforma will manage to garner enough support and followers.
